John Dewey High School is a large comprehensive high school with a structure of six personalized small learning communities: STEM, Pre-Med, ‘Law & Justice’, ‘Business & Culinary’, ‘Fine & Performing Arts’ and the ‘Teaching Academy’. We are a diverse community consisting of 29% Black student population, 27% Asian, 15% White and 26% Hispanic respectively. Each academy has a sequence of classes and electives that are centered around the theme of the academy. Elective classes in academies reflect our vision in partnering with outside community based organizations to create real life experiences for our students at John Dewey. Some examples of elective classes offered are: medical professions, medical technology, EMT preparation course, Moot Court/Mock Trial, forensic science, robotics, engineering, theater, dance, photography, marine science, culinary and lab school experience. Our partnerships include One Goal, SEAL Elective (Social Emotional Advisors and Leaders), NY State Attorney offices, National Arts Honor Society, Stella Adler Theater Company, FIRST Robotics, Kingsborough Community College, Burton Chill Foundation, the American Red Cross just to name a few.
