"What is Dance Ensemble?" Dance refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, social interaction, or presented in a spiritual or performance setting. John Dewey's dance ensemble consists of multiple students who perform choreographed steps in front of a large audience. A variety of dances are performed such as African culture dances, salsa, hip hop, or ballet. Different styles of music and instruments are used to perform these moves to enhance the feeling of each performance to satisfy the audience. |
"Who is responsible for Dance Ensemble?" Mr. John Goring is the dance coordinator for DDE. Originally from Barbados, Mr. Goring is a hard working teacher who has been teaching dance for more than 30 years. He welcomes all students to join DDE to gain the experience of a lifetime. |
"Who is eligible to join Dance Ensemble?" Any student who has a strong passion for dancing is eligible to join Dance Ensemble. Many students join DDE with a lot of dance experience, while some may start out as just beginners. We make it our mission to make everyone feel comfortable and to make sure every stepped is learned. |
"Life after DDE" Many students achieve a great deal of gaining dance experience after joining Dewey Dance Ensemble. It has helped students gain self esteem and broken many students out of their shy habits. Former DDE students who are now alumni's have moved on to becoming successful professional dancers on Broadway. Janelle Rollocks, alumni of 1998, went on to continue her dance education at Howard University, received a BFA degree in Theater Arts Education, and graduated cum laude. Brian McNeal, alumni of 2001, started dancing in 1997 with the guidance of Mr. John Goring. He is a scholarship student at Alvin Ailey & Joffrey Ballet School plus he has participated in Ballet Divertimento's Professional Project in Montreal, Canada. He has a BFA degree from the Julliard School & moved to Germany to join Ballet Theatre Munich. Jinny McGivern, alumni of 2001, is a graduate of SUNY Purchase Conservatory of dance & is pursuing a BFA with double concentrations in performance & production. As you can see, you are almost guaranteed a successful future after having a four year career in DDE. |
