~Any students who have not yet applied for College should see Mrs. Shayo as soon as possible, it’s not too late.
~F.A.F.S.A. forms are available on line at fafsa.ed.gov. 
~Any student applying to a private college should contact the college to see if a PROFILE form is required.  This specific financial aid form costs $5 for registration and $18 per school.  Each school has their own submission deadline date, check with the individual school for information.
~ Undocumented students should visit the following website for information: www.neighborhoodlink.com/org/sodo.
~Any student who intends on pursuing a career as a teacher, nurse, or police officer should inquire about a Perkins loan at the college they will be attending, repayment might not be required.
~All Juniors should be registering to take an S.A.T.; the new S.A.T. contains a writing section and costs $43.  Any student who intends on applying to a competitive school should be taking a S.A.T. II in May or June.  In addition, students should register to take the A.C.T. with Writing.
~ Be sure to check the “Wanted” list in front of the College Office. 
~Juniors should be making an appointment to meet with Mrs. Shayo regarding College advisement.
~Students should continue to check the bulletin board outside the College Office for new information on Scholarships, Open Houses and other important information.

~Seniors: Be on the lookout for a senior mailing from J.D.H.S.  Students must return the postgraduate survey form in order to have a final transcript sent to the College that they will be attending.  Please continue to advise the College Office of any scholarships that you have been awarded, even if you do not intend to accept the scholarship or attend that school. 
 

Apple Scholarship $2,000 + MacBook Pro + iPod nano.  Students must demonstrate academic and extracurricular achievement, future plans with intent to use technology, describe the degree which student used technology in academics and the ability to articulate the value of digital media in academic life.  For an application, go to http://education.apple.com/scholars/.  Deadline 5/30/06.
BP Community Scholarship Program $1,500.  Factors considered are: grades, work history, community involvement, geography and financial need.  For an application, go to www.bpscholarships.org.  Deadline 5/16/08.
Carpe Diem Foundation of Illinois Scholarship Program $2,500-$5,000 Based on all-around excellence, community service, recommendations and three essays.  For an application, go to www.caprediemfoundation.org.  Deadline 5/12/06
The Charles Robertson Scholarship 2008 Application In essay form, please respond to the following question.  Please limit your essay to 250-500 words.  “If you had to write an autobiography, what would be the title and why?”  Please see Patti for this application.  Deadline 5/28/08.
Comite Noviembre Scholarship Awards Program Applicants must be of Puerto Rican descent, have a minimum of one-year of volunteer community service experience, have a minimum average of 81.5, submit a biographical sketch and be willing to attend a mandatory interview on 6/28/06.   Extended due date 6/1/06
Educational Communications Inc. Scholarship Foundation $1,000-$6,000.  Students must demonstrate financial need.  For an application, go to www.ecisf.org.  Deadline 5/08.
Free Spirit Gathering Community Scholarship Program $500.  For students who plan on majoring in the field of therapeutic massage, holistic healing, or other non-traditional programs.  For an application, go to www.freespiritgathering.org/  Deadline 5/08.
Greatest Generation Scholarship $60,000.  Students must demonstrate an 85+ average, SAT of 1650+ (including the Writing section), submit a 500-1000 word essay on how the following quote by John Donne applies to your community service, “No man is an island, entire of itself: every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main…any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.”, leadership ability, service excellence, financial need and 85% or better h.s. attendance for the entire 4 years.  Finalists will have to demonstrate oral communication skills in an interview with the selection committee.  See Mrs. Shayo if you are interested in this scholarship, we can nominate 2 students.  Application deadline 5/03/08.
Greater New York Chinese Community Dollars for Scholars $2,000-$4,000.  F+or students of Chinese descent in the Greater N.Y. area w/a 90+ average, 6 merit scholarship and 2 new immigrant  scholarships.  For an application, contact tina@chinesescholarship.org.  Deadline 5/30/08.
Haitian American Alliance Scholarship $2,000.  Students must submit a copy of their parents most recent W-2 Forms and Tax Return and complete an essay on “What does it mean to be Haitian or Haitian-American in New York City.”  Deadline 5/20/05
Hispanic Support Organization of New York (HSO_NY) $2,500 Must be of Hispanic heritage, submit proof of income, and a 2-page, double spaced, typed essay outlining: How would you inspire Hispanics in your community to further their education?  What tactics would you use?  What tools would you provide?  How would you measure the success of the project?  For an application, go to www.hispanicsupportorganization.org/    Deadline 4/29/06
Jewish Foundation for Education of Women Scholarships $5,000 For Jewish women studying education, performing arts, social work or other subjects.  For an application, go to www.jfew.org/jfew.programs.scholarships.php  Deadline 6/08.
Joseph P.C. Mei Foundation $500.  For citizens or permanent residents of Chinese descent.  Applicants must have good moral character and academic standing and complete an essay.  Deadline 6/15/05.
Mausica Teachers’ Alumni Scholarship $300.  For a Caribbean student with a strong academic background.  Deadline 5/13/05.
National Federation of Italian-American Societies $500.  Candidates must be of Italian heritage, have an overall average of 80+, demonstrated service to school and community.  Deadline 5/1/06
Otto Sussman Trust For students who have financial need due to illness or death in the immediate family or some other unusual or unfortunate circumstance.  For more information, see Patti.  Deadline 8/08.

The Texas Instrument Marcia Page Scholarship for African American Females $5,000.  Students must be African American females that demonstrate academic achievement, leadership skills or community service in the area of math, engineering, or technology and the applicant’s commitment to pursue a career in math, engineering, or technology field.  Students must have an 85+ average.  Students must respond to the following essays: (1) a major life change and (2) why you have chosen to pursue a career in math, engineering, or technology field.  www.cgcs.org/pdsf/06MPscholarship.pdf.  Deadline 5/15/06

Unmet Need Scholarships Eligibility: Scholarship applicants must: be a US citizen; have a family
adjusted gross income of $30,000 or less; demonstrate unmet financial need of at least $1,000 after the
financial aid award package has been determined; be a high school senior or graduate planning to enroll
or a student already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited postsecondary
institution; and, have a cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).

World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship To cover the cost of tuition, room and board, etc. at S.U.N.Y. colleges.  Covered incidents include: the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01 in N.Y.C., the Pentagon and Pennsylvania and the on-going rescue and recovery efforts.
