AES Scholarship- $500. Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words on: Explain the importance of your current studies in today’s society OR There is general agreement that our economy is in trouble. CIA Undergraduate Scholarship Program Annual salary including benefits and up to $18,000 per calendar year for tuition, mandatory fees, books, and supplies. First Freedom Student Competition $750-$3,000. Four or more books, academic journals, news magazines, newspapers, government documents or publications are required for research on this school year's assigned topic. Gates Millennium Scholars/Hispanic Scholarship fund Eligible students must be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American, have a 88.3+ average, have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities. Horatio Alger Scholarship Program For students who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. 9th Grade:
~ Select classes that are interesting to you, it will help in gaining a higher GPA. Interesting classes often motivate students to work harder, along with possibly finding out what kind of major you will be determining in the future.
~ Get involved in school academic programs.
~ Do school service.
~ Participate in activities. Become involved in a sport, club, S.O. in school or at a local organization/hospital/office, etc.

~ If you're interested in the world of business, consider joining Academy of Finance. ~ Start researching colleges, check out websites and go to college fairs. Familiarize yourself with the College Office. Introduce yourself to the College Counselor, Ms. Rattray-Clarke.
~ Take the SAT II in Earth Science or Chemistry, World History and Algebra I.
~ Make wise summer plans, such as: summer school, college summer program, doing an internship, volunteering, or working.
11th Grade:

~ Take the P.S.A.T. in October.
~ Take A.P. courses with S.A.T. II upon completion.

~ On vacations, visit college campuses. Keep notes on each school (What did you like or dislike?)
~ Continue being active both in school and outside of school.
~ Get letters of recommendation from College summer program professors or internship employers.
~ Begin writing your autobiography and resume, have an English teacher check it.
~ Attend JDHS college fair, junior assemblies and Financial Aid Night (in December).
~ Start researching scholarships through www.collegeboard.com, www.fastweb.com, newsletters, websites, etc.
~ If you're fluent in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and/or Spanish, take an SAT II w/Listening In January.
~ Take the SAT & ACT in May and June. If you need a fee waiver, make sure that you've submitted a lunch form. Student's who receive free lunch are eligible for an SAT and/or an ACT fee waiver.
~ Do a summer program or internship (Academy of Finance), visit college campuses.
~ Over the summer, study for the SAT or the ACT, whichever you scored higher on this year.
12th Grade:

~ Check the bulletin board outside of the College Office on a daily basis.
~ Meet with college representatives when they visit the College Office.
~ Take the SAT or ACT two more times this year in October, November, and/or December. The ACT is also given in September (the deadline to apply is mid-August).
~ Attend JDHS College Fair in October and the Big Apple College Fair.
~ Attend senior assemblies and Financial Aid Night (in December).
~ Get up to 3 letters of recommendation and submit them to the College Office.
~ If you are applying to a competitive college and need a letter of recommendation from your Guidance Counselor, you must submit a Senior Survey to your Guidance Counselor.
~ Narrow your college list.
~ Submit applications to the College Office in a timely manner, w/stamps. Be aware of deadlines.
~ In December, you and your parent must file for a P.I.N. @ www.fafsa.ed.gov
~ In January, file for financial aid @ www.fafsa.ed.gov and www.hesc.org.
~ Submit mid-year reports if necessary, w/stamps. ~ By May 1, make your final decision and mail a deposit to the school that you will be attending. Notify in writing or e-mail all schools of your choice.
~ In June, make sure to submit Post-Graduate survey w/stamps, so that we may send your final transcript to the college that you will be attending.
